Shielding yourself from burn injury in the workplace is a safety priority since severe burns can lead to long-term disability. According to data published in the Annals of Burns and Fire Disasters, various research shows that between 10 and 40% of significant burn injuries occur at work.

Keep these safety steps in mind to protect yourself from workplace burns.

Use caution with chemicals

Avoid chemical burns by carefully reading the safety data sheet for every chemical you use, and wear the recommended personal protective equipment for that specific substance. If you do come in contact with chemicals, remove your clothing immediately and flush the affected area with water for at least 20 minutes. Then, seek medical assistance.

Pay attention to procedure

If you work in a location with possible heat exposure, your employer should have an established protocol for avoiding burn injuries and other safety hazards. Follow these steps to protect yourself and your coworkers. If you have not received safety procedures or training, talk to your supervisor.

Keep your workspace clear

Debris and clutter create fire hazards and make it more difficult to escape without injury if a fire occurs at work. Remove boxes, papers, unused equipment and other unnecessary items from your area. Make sure routes that lead to building exits are open and clear.

Avoid electrical burns

Shock and electrical burns can be life-threatening. When working in an area with potential electricity exposure, never carry water that could spill and lead to a serious burn injury. Know the locations of live wires, and make sure high-voltage equipment and zones have clear safety signs. Wear PPE whenever working in those areas. If a coworker suffers a shock, turn off the power to the area before providing assistance.

Before starting a job at any new worksite, know the locations of first aid kits, fire extinguishers, eyewash stations and emergency exits. Talk to your supervisor if you are unsure of the proper safety procedures to follow for a particular task.
