Depending on your profession in Dallas, Georgia, you may be the type of person who lifts heavy objects day after day. For example, movers, construction workers and delivery drivers are always lifting, pulling and pushing heavy objects.
Even if you’re physically fit and feel good about your ability to do your job, there’s always a possibility you could suffer an injury when lifting at work.
There are many safe lifting techniques you can follow with the idea of preventing injury. Some of the things you should do include:
- Stretch often. Before your workday begins, take 5 to 10 minutes to stretch your body. Also, if you’re going to take on a heavy lift, stretch for a couple minutes before doing so. This will ensure that your muscles are ready for the strain.
- Know what you’re lifting. From the item to the actual weight, the more knowledge you have, the easier it is to plan the lift and to prevent an accident and/or injury.
- Check your route. Before lifting the item, walk the route to ensure that there are no obstacles in your way. For example, if there is debris on the ground, remove it before starting.
- Lift with your legs, not with your back. It’s easy to forget this one tip, so make sure you remind yourself of it before every lift.
- Keep your back straight. When you bend down to lift an item, keep your back straight. To lift the item, simply straighten your legs.
- Ask for help. If you can’t comfortably and safely lift an item on your own, find someone to assist you. There’s nothing wrong with asking for help.
Even if you do these things, you could still injure your back or neck at work. If this happens, put the object down and stay where you are. You may also want to call for help, as attempting to move after a back or neck injury could worsen the condition.

Once you understand your injuries, your treatment schedule and how long it will take to recover, you can then make a decision on how to approach your job. Should you need to take time off, you will probably want to file a claim for workers’ compensation benefits.
